At the time of our inspection 53 people were living at the service. Moorend Place is a 52 bed care home, which provides nursing care and residential care for people living with dementia. The first floor derwent is a 30 bed unit with both residential and nursing client. We saw the service promoted people’s wellbeing by taking account of their needs including activities within the service. We received positive comments about the activities worker and we saw how well they interacted with people. We saw the service would benefit from having an additional activities worker to support people to further participate and engage in more personalised and smaller group activities.

People and relatives did not have any concerns about the staffing levels at the service. We saw there were sufficient staff to provide support to people living at the service. If any concerning information is received we may inspect sooner. Respect for privacy and dignity was at the heart of the service’s culture and values. We saw this was fully embedded in everything the service and staff did. People, relatives and staff felt respected, listened to, and influential. We reviewed the information and data available to us about Moorend Place on 8 December 2022. We have not found evidence that we need to reassess the rating at this stage.

I am proud to work at Lowgate and hope my own involvement and passion for my job help to enhance the lives of the people who live and work here. We found some staff had not received a comprehensive induction and that was relevant to their role. This told us people were at risk of not receiving the care and treatment and support from staff who are knowledgeable and competent to carry out their roles. A few people's personal hygiene records indicated they had been supported to have a daily body wash but they had not had a shower or bath during July. We spoke with the manager who assured us that people would be supported with their personal hygiene to maintain their dignity. We found the service had responded to people and/or their representative’s concerns, investigated them and had taken action to address their concerns.

The home was aware of the need to submit applications for people to assess and authorise that any restrictions in place were in the best interests of the person. The service had a robust quality assurance system in place and records showed that identified problems were addressed promptly. As a result the quality of the service was continuously improving. The recruitment systems were designed to make sure new staff were only employed if they were suitable to work at the service. This inspection took place on 11 August 2020 and was announced. The service was selected to take part in this thematic review which is seeking to identify examples of good practice in infection prevention and control. A copy of the latest relatives meeting minutes was available for people and visitors to the service to read in the reception area. There was a relative’s board where people’s relatives or representatives were kept informed about information relevant to them. During the inspection we observed domestic staff cleaning different parts of the service. However, we found there were malodours on one of the stairways and in the lounge areas of the home. We spoke with the registered manager who assured us that they would take action to address these concerns. We saw evidence that regular checks were undertaken of the premises and equipment.
Instead, he feels happier and more content than he has for years. His agitation is greatly reduced and as a result, has only had one fall at Moorend Place. Dad transferred into Moorend Place a couple of weeks ago from another care home in order to be closer to be his family.
I like to feel that I can make a difference to peoples’ lives who suffer from dementia. Roseberry Care Centres is a company where people matter, and that applies to our staff as well as to the people who use our services. We approach the delivery of care on what we call “The Care Partnership” basis. Simply, this means that you and your family retain full control of how your care should be delivered.
We also found some people's risk assessment and care plans had not always been reviewed within the monthly timescale specified within the document or in response to a change in their needs. For example, one person's urinary; bowel and oral assessment had not been reviewed since the 1st of April 2014. Another person's challenging behaviour had not been reviewed since 1st April 2014. People and relatives we spoke with told us the service was well managed and made positive comments about the registered manager. We noticed that some staff had been working at the service for a significant amount of time with no further Disclosure and Barring Service checks recorded. We recommend the registered provider considers requesting staff to complete an annual self-declaration relating to criminal convictions incurred since their previous criminal record check was provided.
